SIR W.G. ARMSTRONG, WHITWORTH AND COMPANY.

THE NEW STEAMER GRANTALA
A SPLENDID VESSEL.
On May 28 the new screw passenger steamer
Grantala, built to the order of the Adelaide
Steamship Company, was successfully launched
from the Walker Shipyard of Sir W. G. Armstrong,
Whitworth, & Co. The Grantala, which is a sister 
ship to the Yongala (recently launched from the same 
yard) is intended for the Commonwealth passenger and 
cargo trade.

Yongala was launched 29 April, a month before.

Sir W. G. Armstrong, Whitworth and Co of Elswick, Newcastle upon Tyne was a major British manufacturing company of the early years of the 20th century. Armstrong, Whitworth engaged in the construction of armaments, ships, locomotives, automobiles, and aircraft.

1899 the company produced the third largest tonnage of ships in the UK - 57 540 tons. Naval ship construction formed a large component of production.
